Three BMW M8 Models Reportedly Given The Production Green Light

BMW has reportedly given the green light to not one, not two but three models set to resurrect the M8 badge.

BMW Blog claims to have received word from several sources close to the German automaker that an M8 Coupe, M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupe are all on the drawing board at BMW and will top out the upcoming 8-Series range.

Unsurprisingly, BMW hasn’t released any details about these three M8 body styles but it is claimed that the coupe will be the first to arrive in 2019. It will then be followed by the M8 Convertible and M8 Gran Coupe in 2020.

The 8-Series badge will be adopted by successors to the 6-Series Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe and it is appropriate that the company will apply the fabled M8 badge to these range-topping models.

While a BMW M8 has never previously been offered to customers, a prototype was created in the 1990’s. It remained locked away until 2010 and was installed with a monster V12 engine, six-speed manual transmission, custom bodywork and a stripped-out interior.

When the new M8 arrives, all models will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 delivering in excess of 600 hp and will square off directly against the Mercedes-AMG S63 and S65 models.

    Looking outdated already

Not really but this is a 4 years old concept car anyway.

    Disappointed. M8 needs a V12. 5/6 series has the V8.

So BMW is replacing the 6 Series with the 8 Series meaning that there will no longer be a 6 Series? Seems like there needs to be both. The issue was that BMW over priced the current 6 Series. It was up there with the 7 Series in price. The 6 Series should have been closer to the 5 Series in price. I actually cross shopped the Audi A7 with the BMW 6 Series and the prices were in two totally different ranges. The A7 was in the high $60k to mid $70k range and the 6 Series Grand Coupe was in the $90k range… and the Audi actually had more standard equipment and standard AWD. It made no sense to pay a $30k premium to get the BMW with the same options and AWD… with a smaller trunk. I guess that BMW realized this so they are pushing the model upstream to justify the price of admission. However, there still needs to be a “real” 6 Series as well that’s priced around the 5 Series models.

    • seriously

well the A7 is an A6 hatchback with the an identical interior paying a premium for the A7 over the A6 also seems foolish it’s merely a body style difference. BMW at least have the 6 series a unique interior to go along with its higher asking price

      • seriously

on that same note the TT IS merely an A3 coupe but it is priced against the A5 Audis pricing in general on some models is silly but hey if people will pay the money why not

      • nastinupe

True but the A7 is actually a wider car with a wider interior. It’s not identical. Also, there’s only a $10,000 premium between the two. You may think that’s it’s a $20,000 premium between the two but not really because the A7 doesn’t have the 4 cylinder 2.0 as an option, only the SC 6 Cylinder 3.0.

        • seriously

the 3.0t A6 is 10k cheaper than an equivalent A7 for what is the same car with a different body style, The CLE, and 6 series are based on the e and 5 but also have completely different interiors that are nicer than the cars they’re based on as I said a price difference especially as large as the gap between the A6 and A7 is silly other than exterior styling theyre is No difference between the 2. If you don’t agree you don’t agree doesn’t make it any less true lol.

          • nastinupe

Please go back and read the first two sentences of my previous reply. The A6 and A7 aren’t identical, they are similar, there is a difference in interior size between the two. Also, I don’t believe that $10,000 is too much to pay for revised exterior styling. Hell I had an Acura TL A Spec and all it was was fenders, spoiler and a stiffened suspension and they charged a $5,600 premium over the regular TL. The A7 is an entirely different body all together. Also, you’re saying that just because the interior is a little different on the 6 Series then that justifies a $30,000 price increase? Come on man, that doesn’t even make any sense. Exterior changes are far more expensive than interior revisions.

Besides, there’s no reason to argue with me because BMW also realized the error in their ways and is looking to correct it. So keep arguing for a case that BMW has already conceded that they have lost. The trial is over and the case is closed. They were wrong and have moved on… you should too.

      completely agreed!
6 series is pointless and overpriced.
bmw has been working on different ideas on 6 series replacement, because it is failed, existing one couldn’t achieve.

anyway,do you know which 6 series is the best?
the answer:your friend’s is the best, because you (acually nobody) are not buying it.

  • Kaisuke971

The M760Li already makes 608hp, and since the 8 Series would be the coupe version of the 7 then it would make sense that the powertrains are carried over. Then, an M8 would need at least 700hp to be coherent.

But BMW seems to be making more of a big 6 Series, so something based on the 5 but with the 7’s interior quality. That’s kinda disappointing to be honest.

    They WOT M8?

The 6 wasn’t posh enough to complete with MB’s best. There should be a new 6 based off the new Supra too.

BMW is falling behind Merc in breaking out of the conventional styling and it’s loosing out to Merc so quickly and Audi is catching up quickly in the last 10 yr to replace BMW in the top 3 German Luxury.

  • Belthronding Tinuviel

they have to make something smaller, lighter and shorter.
i am not asking 911 rival 2+2,but take a look at that segment competitors,6 series seems like a tank!
it has to be much more driver car.
