Hot Scoop: 2019 Audi A7 Prototype Goes Up In Flames During Testing

Audi’s engineers were testing a prototype of the 2019 A7 in the Austrian Alps, when suddenly the car caught fire in front of our spy’s camera.

Apparently this Audi A7 mule suffered from some sort of catastrophic failure while pulling a dead weight trailer up the Alps and flames started shooting from between the hood and the windshield.

Once the flames were spotted, Audi’s engineers pulled over and managed to get all of their things out of the car in time. A roadside service employee tried to put the fire out with a handheld extinguisher but this wasn’t enough to stop the flames from devouring the prototype.

The fire required only 15 to 20 minutes to completely destroy the car, with the fire department showing up and extinguishing the fire. Luckily, no one was hurt.

An incident like this is a stark reminder of the development testing’s importance, as it allows carmakers to pinpoint possible faults of their new models, before they launch them into the market.

The upcoming 2019 Audi A7 will be based on the latest and much lighter MLB-Evo platform that is already used in models such as the Q7. Its design will reportedly be heavily inspired by the Audi Prologue Concept but we’ll have to wait until the end of the year at least to see if this is true.

It’s a pity it’s Nvidia developing their autonomous driving systems, rather than Samsung, as the irony would have just been beautiful. In all seriousness, I hope everyone involved in this is unharmed.

Exhaust manifold gets too hot during towing, would be my guess. Anyone?

    • Six_Tymes

probably, but who knows. could be all sorts of issues.

When you use your handheld extinguisher, and then shit gets real.

    • Harry_Wild

Maybe the wrong chemical in the extinguisher! Did the reverse!

  • pureworx

hmm.. not sure what the cause might be but i have noticed that the tunnel between the seats does get quiet hot after some spirited driving in these.

I own one and I’ve never noticed that. I feel like this car is never coming out. I’ve owned mine so long that it’s been paid off for like a year now and I’m bored. I want something else to buy and I’m just sitting here twiddling my thumbs in impatience.

      • pureworx

you’ve probably not driven it like a rental? since its your car.. after all rental cars are the fastest cars in the world.

    Take that BMW.

    “Hot Scoop”…LMAO That’s pretty funny:D

  • Kash

i guess that engine will be rated as “not rated for towing”

  • Harry_Wild

To hot to handle, this new prototype! Drive an A7 and you might be playing with fire! Now that what I can a “hot” car!

Audi still can’t get their emissions under control

  • padam

The interior looks pretty basic. It could become the lightest car in its class though.

Such a shame but glad everyone’s all right, reasons why testing like these are done before production.
