This isn’t the first time a vehicle has crashed into a backyard swimming pool, but this story is particularly frightening, especially to those who have young children.

Last Friday afternoon in San Diego, a 68-year-old female driver lost control of the pickup and careened off the street, through the wooden fence of the house and plunged into the swimming pool, coming to a rest on its side almost fully submerged, Fox 5 reports.

Fortunately for the driver, bystander Gabriel Mejia jumped into action after witnessing the crash and swiftly dived in to the pool, smashed through the driver’s side window with his hands and was able to hold the woman’s head above water, saving her life, until emergency crews arrived to free her.

Police at the scene haven’t released specific details about the woman’s condition other than that she was taken to hospital with a head condition.

Thankfully, neither the homeowners or their children were near the swimming pool at the time of the crash.
