Elon Musk Shows Hyperloop Hitting Over 200 MPH

Elon Musk has dropped a video showing a hyperloop pod hitting an impressive 201 mph (324 km/h) top speed.

The hyperloop transportation pod isn’t the work of Musk himself nor Tesla or SpaceX. Instead, it comes from the winning team of the second Hyperloop competition and was made by a group of 30 students from the Technical University of Munich.

As part of the competition, Musk’s team built a 0.8-mile test tube and the brief video shows that the technology is capable of blisteringly fast acceleration and deceleration. However, Musk believes that high acceleration won’t be needed when the hyperloop begins transporting passengers, saying the acceleration could be spread out over 20+ miles to ensure a smooth ride.

The outspoken chief executive ultimately believes that tests may be able to take the pod to speeds of around 800 mph (1,287 km/h) in the 0.8-mile tube.

Earlier this month, Musk revealed he wants to build his own hyperloop, despite two major startups also working on the fifth mode of transportation.

So, what does 200mph+ wreck look like in a tunnel?

    • Marty

Probably as bad as a 60 mph+ wreck on a road.
(And you will probably see a million of those for every tunnel wreck.)

  • Wayne Alan Carr Heyes

what worries me is yes it might be a good idea and is super fast

what if it crashes ? or terrorists get there hands on it !

    • MonkeyRider

You can through the same question on the air planes, high speed rails..

Actually on any type of transportaion.

    • Wandering_Spirit

If terrorists get their hands on it they will be able to travel really fast 🙂 (I am kidding of course)

Actually go FROM New York to Washington in 30 minutes.

  • We don’t know if this will work, but I’m glad at least someone is trying.

  • It took 30 years for the Japan Railways Bullet train to hit 200 mph mark. Tesla did it in just a few years. Simply amazing.

    • exeptor

Correct with small clarification – now you have all the knowledge and technologies to go 200+ mph, i.e. no need to do extensive testing even for the smallest things, to search materials and sometimes to actually create them, etc. Things are not black and white.

All that money and he couldn’t put a decent dashcam on the thing?

  • Astonman

What is amazing is how quickly it stopped!

    • mike

I was thinking the same….just imagine ur eyeballs poping out of its sockets when u stop

      • Astonman

That would be a sight – or the lack of one afterwards…

  • Eagle By Singer

Jesus, your face would just fall off at those speeds. Still amazing.

    Meh lol

If it happens and if it is what he said it will be then we are talking revolution not just in transportation, but the way we live and work. I went over the pictures and saw the map of Germany – 140 minutes to fully cover the country!!! Let’s imagine just for a second that this can be achieved – you can live in Munich and work in Hamburg and you will spend like 2h 30min on traveling (it is quite some time but on the other hand many people spend this amount of time even now). In addition – if it costs 10 times less than bullet train then it can be relatively affordable (ticket price can’t be 10 times less expensive but at least 2-3 times) even for the working class. I can imagine that the car industry will suffer quite a lot if we have this.
