All-Electric Saab 99 Is A Sign Of The Future

Electric cars are shaping up to be the future and while many auto enthusiasts will be keen to hang on to their ICE-powered cars for as long as possible, others are embracing the EV revolution and converting classics to electric propulsion.

What we have here is a Saab 99 in Finland that has been converted into an EV in a process that took the owner a couple of years.

According to Saab Planet, the owner, Mika Leppälahti, has traveled 195 km on a single charge and believes his electric Saab could theoretically reach a respectable 245 km/h.

We don’t have any details about what electric motor or battery pack the car uses but Leppälahti says he hasn’t encountered any issues in the 5,200 miles of driving he’s done.

Neat. I wonder how hard these conversions really are? Electric motors are rather simple I’ve read.

    • Matt

It’s much easier on a classic car that has no stability/traction control etc systems which link to the car’s ECU.

    I AM SOAKING WET.

Indeed…classic car restoration will develop a thriving market for electric conversions. It will open the hobby to those with more modest budgets. As well as people who don’t want to deal with all the moving parts of “legacy drivetrains”…and may want to actually drive the car .

Way to ruin a good car.

    • Matt

      This.

      • Auto

Was that supposed to be a link? It didn’t work.

        • Matt

It’s just Internet shorthand/slang for ‘this is a true statement’.

I’ve owned two classic 900’s and hate seeing them cut up and turned into freak shows.

    • LOOKS LIKE HE GAVE IT A SECOND LIFE.

  • NICE JOB.
I’VE NEVER BEEN A SAAB FAN BUT THIS WOULD BE AN IDEAL BRAND TO GO FULL ELECTRIC, QUIRKS AND ALL.

  • Big Black Duck

I literally love this idea…if we can convert existing cars…..its the way to go

    Epic!
