Maserati Wants To Launch A Second SUV By 2020

FCA chief executive Sergio Marchionne has announced Maserati’s intention to launch a second SUV by 2020.

According to Marchionne, the vehicle will feature Alfa Romeo underpinnings and be positioned below the Levante. It remains unclear why Maserati has decided against using the platform of the Levante and Ghibli, instead opting for the Giorgio rear-wheel drive/ all-wheel drive platform of both the Giulia and Stelvio.

The SUV will directly rival the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Jaguar F-Pace.

Marchionne believes the launch of the second SUV will help increase the company’s annual earnings to 1 billion euros ($1.18 billion), Automotive News reports.

“It remains unclear why Maserati has decided against using the platform of the Levante and Ghibli, instead opting for the Giorgio rear-wheel drive/ all-wheel drive platform of both the Giulia and Stelvio”

Perhaps it is due to the fact that the Levante platform is used by models of 5 meters or more, while the Stelvio platform is used by models up to 4.70 meters. In addition to being a more recent platform with great weight reduction and use of light materials and has been received by the critic in the best way possible.

Sounds like good reasons to me.

Platform means something else, not the chassis length.

      • Thomas

Yes, the definition varies and is more extensive than that. But the Platform includes the hard points that in turn determine MINIMUM lengths (more than the maximum length) by which designers are guided to have a reasonable bodywork.

You know *something* but it’s not that either.

The cuv must be regarded as the greatest influence in automotive history. It singularly limited the minivan market. Wiped out the station wagon. Eroded the car market. And now make dedicated sports car companies into cuv giants. Porsche, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati and Lotus will no longer be regarded as one.

Meanwhile over at Chrysler and Dodge…

Only thing happening at Dodge is the Demon and that hype train isn’t going to last long after the reviews are done. Chysler is pretty much DOIA (Dead on it’s ass).

Stelvio is a great car, is competitor of F.Pace, Q5, x3 and GLC. FCA need a car against Macan and little Levante will do it.

How is Maserati still even afloat?? Until they and Alfa offer 6yr/100k bumper-to-bumper warranties with the industries best fit and finish, they will not shake their shoddy build quality reputation. When I go to the auction and see 2015 and 2016’s with almost no miles, Im shocked at how little they sell for. The depreciation is severe on all of them and it doesn’t take an industry expert to figure out why. They are pretty (relatively), sound great, perform well, but are not addressing their number 1 issue, perceived and actual quality and reliability. An Audi, Lexus, MB, or BMW look exquisitely made side by side with any Maser/Alfa.
