Tesla’s Semi-Truck Looks Mighty Fast While Accelerating

While it may be nowhere near as quick as the Roadster or any of the other road cars, Tesla’s Semi can still run circles around any diesel-powered hauler on the market.

In fact, Tesla says the Semi can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 5 seconds as long as it’s not dragging a trailer behind. Otherwise, it would typically need 20 seconds, which is actually still very impressive.

Thanks to this footage shot during Tesla’s Semi and Roadster unveiling event, we can see how quickly the truck disappears into the distance once it builds up speed.

Unlike the road cars, it doesn’t quite jump off the line in an instant, but after a couple of seconds, the burst of speed becomes noticeable. Also, its previously-mentioned 0-60 time of 5 seconds is similar to what you can do in an FIA Race Truck, and those things have well over 1,000 HP.

Of course, Elon Musk didn’t intend for this thing to be all about straight line speed, which is why the Tesla Semi can cover as much as 500 miles (800 km) on one charge, and tow an 80,000 lbs (36 tonne) load.

Top Gear should have some fun reviewing this. Race it against a 1990 Corvette.

  • salamOOn

i would like to see some braking test rather than this….

    • S3XY

      k.

  • SteersUright

Neat, wish them luck selling a bunch of these! Hopefully mean cleaner air for all of us.

    • S3XY

No tail pipe. No smelly truck.

    • Ameer Hassan Tajaldeen

i wouldnt mind this as a daily driver lol

  • MarketAndChurch

I want this truck even more! I wonder if it has the Autopilot feature from the Model S.

    • jsz00

No you don’t, you can’t afford and have no use for it.

      • MarketAndChurch

Yeah but that doesn’t stop people from wanting and lusting after a lambo, mclaren, or a Bentley. They would rather have those cars, I’d rather have this, or the new Aston Vantage.

      • S3XY

You can’t afford anything. You’re broke.

      • Auf Wiedersehen

I love comments like this, from people to people they don’t even know. How do you know this guy can’t afford it OR that he has no use for it?

  • BlackPegasus

If this truck can be simplified for the masses then it will be a success. I wish Tesla the best. Clean, emissions free big trucks are almost impossible for some of us to imagine, but it’s within reach as shown with the Tesla big rig.

    • jsz00

      It’s not for the masses…

      • S3XY

For mass companies, which are the masses.

  • Jerry Hightower

I’d be more interested in the braking distance. Here in the Austin area there’s quite a few semi/car accidents.

    • S3XY

Considering it has enhanced autopilot and strong regen the braking is very strong.

  • Createmargin

Thank you Tesla for pushing the EV transitions.

  • Vassilis

Right. This really isn’t the purpose of semis.

    • S3XY

Someone’s jealous a Semi is quicker than their car.

      • Vassilis

LOL yeah that’s it. You cannot possibly be so silly.

      • europeon

If you would stop getting high on fElon’s farts for a moment, you’ll hear the voices of truckers around the world that are saying that they don’t care about how fast a truck accelerates, but about how good it brakes.

        • Enter Ranting

As someone who frequently has to enter a freeway behind a semi, I would welcome a fast one.

  • S3XY

    Tesla Semi vs. Ferrari.

  • Tom

Neat, wish them luck selling a bunch of these! Hopefully mean cleaner air for all of us.
