Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has been erupting for several days now and the resulting lava flow has made it into the nearby neighborhood of Leilani Estates.

USA Today reports the lava is up to 10 feet (3 meters) deep and has resulted in the destruction of at least 26 homes. The slow moving lava also recently claimed a fourth-generation Ford Mustang which was parked on the side of the road.

There’s no word on why the vehicle’s owner didn’t get the Mustang out of the path of destruction but it’s possible they simply didn’t have enough time when the evacuations went into effect. Regardless of the reason, the car was no match for the slow moving lava as video from the scene shows the lava flow eventually reaching the car and setting the tires on fire. The flow then pushes the car further off the side of the road as it becomes engulfed in flames. After awhile, the car is eventually covered by lava and disappears from view.

While it’s possible that the car could have been saved, the Leilani Estates neighborhood is an extremely dangerous place right now as reports suggest lava is escaping from at least ten different vents or fissures that have opened up beneath the neighborhood. Besides the slow moving lava, people have to be careful as the eruptions are throwing molten rocks up to 200 feet (61 meters) into the air.

If that wasn’t bad enough, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the island on Friday after a series of smaller tremors. The larger quake was the biggest to hit the state in more than 40 years.
