The owner of a purple Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has shared footage of his prized muscle car being engulfed by fire and destroyed by the side of the road.

As described by its owner in the video that follows, the car had a rather unfortunate history, even before combusting earlier this month.

Trouble first struck the car some time ago, when the original 6.2-liter supercharged V8 blew up. The car was soon outfitted with a brand new engine which, sadly, didn’t last very long, either. The owner claims that throughout the new engine’s break-in period, he experienced a number of issues like surging and stumbling of the powertrain.

On the fateful day of the fire, the man took out his prized Hellcat on a rural road but it started making strange noises and refused to accelerate.

After trying to resolve the issue with a healthy boot-full of the throttle, the owner eventually pulled over after smelling gas. Moments later, the car caught fire and the man was forced to evacuate, taking his phone with him and recording the tragic sight.

The automaker and insurance company will probably investigate the fire, but it’s possible it might be related to the recall Dodge issued three years ago for potential fuel leaks affecting the Challenger Hellcat and the four-door Charger Hellcat.
