Many of us have probably driven over a water covered roadway and not given it much thought. After all, what’s the harm in driving over a few inches of water?

That’s probably what the driver of this Chevrolet S-10 was thinking when he decided to go through a puddle of water in Worcester, Massachusetts. As you can see in the video, the water doesn’t appear that deep even though it covers a relatively large area.

Unbeknownst to him, the puddle was caused by a 24-inch water main that broke earlier in the day. The flowing water caused a large sinkhole to open up underneath the roadway and it was unfortunately covered by the standing water. As a result, he didn’t notice anything was wrong until it was too late.

In the clip, you can see the Chevy make it a few feet into the puddle before the front end nosedives into the water. The driver quickly decides to abandon his sinking truck and begins to climb out the driver’s side window. The driver was reportedly rescued shortly thereafter.

Boston.com reports the man’s S-10 was one of several vehicles that ended up submerged in that hole. There’s no word on how many, but it appears a sedan was just pulled from the sinkhole shortly before the truck. Local media stations report the water main break left up to 50,000 people without water for a short period of time and caused a number of other residents to lose power.
