The team behind Japan’s Aspark Owl electric hypercar have revealed that they could take the car to the Nurburgring with the aim of setting a new electric vehicle record.

Revealed and detailed in full at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, the Aspark Owl has yet to reach the production line but the company has already made some bold claims about it. Consequently, we’re not surprised to hear that a record run at Germany’s most famous racetrack is on the agenda.

While recently speaking with Top Gear, an Aspark spokesperson confirmed the company’s plans belief in the Owl’s performance.

“[The] Aspark Owl performances are allowing us to aim [for] the Nürburgring record,” the spokesperson said.

The Nurburgring’s EV record is held by the Nio EP9 but that vehicle isn’t road-legal. By comparison, the Aspark Owl has been created as a road-legal vehicle.

Powering the Owl are four electric motors delivering a combined 1150 hp and 652 lb-ft (883 Nm) of torque. Thanks to a carbon fiber monocoque and the extensive use of carbon throughout the Owl’s exterior, it weighs a mere 1460 kg (3218 lbs) and can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 2 seconds while sprinting through to a 174 mph (280 km/h) top speed.

Aspark intends on capping production of the Owl to 50 units worldwide and will reveal the finished car at the Dubai Motor Show this coming November. Pricing starts at 3.1 million euros ($3.54 million).
