Audi has confirmed that its family of all-electric e-tron models will continue to grow with the launch of an A4-sized model.

While speaking with Autocar at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, Audi design boss Marc Lichte confirmed that the automaker is working on what will essentially be a smaller version of the E-Tron GT.

“There will be [electric] SUVs and low-floor sporty cars such as the E-tron GT, which is our ‘halo’ car.

“There will be an E-tron GT in the [A4- sized] segment as well. We’re working on this right now.”

Audi is taking electrification very seriously.

According to Lichte, this Audi e-tron model will be underpinned by the same PPE architecture as the larger E-tron GT already shown to the world in concept guise. The vehicle is expected to launch around 2023 and if priced correctly, could be one of Audi’s best-selling electric models.

Audi will bring a number of all-electric models to the market before the A4-sized E-ton GT launches. The first of these new models will be the Audi e-tron Sportback, a coupe-SUV version of the regular e-tron. Not long after reaches showroom floors, Audi will start building the A6-sized e-tron GT and Q4 e-tron. The PB18 e-tron supercar will also hit the market in limited numbers and act as Audi’s halo all-electric model.

Audi isn’t the only German car manufacturer developing an electric vehicle in this segment of the market. BMW is in the midst of developing its i4 electric sports sedan as a direct rival to the Tesla Model 3. It will launch in 2021 and will give Audi a target to aim at.
