BMW wants to make its mid-size SUV great again with the all-new X5 M – and despite the fact that very few, if any, will ever see any track action, the upcoming performance model seems more than capable of attacking the apexes.

Proof stands another spy video, which shows a prototype testing at the Nurburgring and looking good doing so.

Taking a closer look at the license plates reveals that it’s actually the same car that was captured on camera by our spy photographers a couple of weeks ago. And nothing has changed since then, as it still has some light camouflage that’s meant to hide the more aggressive body kit. Compared to the regular fourth-gen X5s, the M Division-developed version sports different front and rear bumpers, larger wheels and quad exhaust tips.

Of course, the X5 M will have a much sportier chassis. The biggest change, however, is found behind those big nostrils: a new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that will, allegedly, put out up to 616 hp (625 PS / 460 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque in the Competition model, and 25 hp (25 PS / 19 kW) less in the standard X5 M. Reports talk about a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration time of less than 4 seconds, which seems plausible, but we’ll have to wait a few more months to find out, as it should be introduced before the end of the year, probably alongside the new X6 M.
