Thanks to automotive test supplier AB Dynamics, the Alfa Romeo F1 Team will now have a new state-of-the-art advanced Vehicle Driving Simulator (aVDS) to use for both race car development as well as performance optimization.
The aVDS was selected by the team after a period of careful analysis of all the other available systems out there.
One of their key requirements was minimizing latency in the visual environment and in the motion system.
“The aVDS offers incredibly low latency and consistency of response due to the unique motion platform concept. This makes it ideal for use in elite motorsport, where the smallest of changes can make the difference between success or failure,” said AB Dynamics exec, Dr Adrian Simms. “We’re delighted to supply Alfa Romeo Racing and look forward to helping bring success to the team.”
Among the system’s strengths are its precisely timed audio, visual, vestibular and haptic cues that help the driver become fully immersed in the test environment.
Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo Racing driver Antonio Giovinazzi had this to say about his team’s new: “The aVDS provides the realism and functionality that best suited the team’s needs. When driving the aVDS, vehicle setup parameter changes were made that were smaller than those typically made on the real car. The aVDS was capable of accurately representing the effect that these changes would have on the real car.”
Heading into this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Alfa Romeo is currently in sixth place in the Constructor Standings, 10 points shy of Renault and 3 points clear of Racing Point.
