McLaren 720S Battles It Out Against Lamborghini Aventador S

Not long ago, the Lamborghini Aventador and its rivals competed in the upper echelon of the supercar market, with lesser supercars, such as the Huracan, Ferrari 458 Italia/488 GTB and McLaren 650S occupying the ‘junior’ supercar space. That’s no longer the case.

With the launch of the 720S a couple of years ago, McLaren pushed the performance envelope of the mid-range supercar to previously unexplored heights. The result is that it now knocks on the door of more expensive and supposedly faster alternatives.

In a bid to see just how fast the McLaren 720S is, CarWow lined up a Spyder alongside an Aventador S Roadster for a series of performance tests.

The first test was a drag race. With rain falling, the rear-wheel drive McLaren had a little difficulty sprinting off the line, giving the AWD Lambo an immediate advantage. However, it soon started to claw its way back and, by the end of the quarter mile, actually blasted past the Lamborghini!

In the second test, the duo lined up for a rolling race from 40 mph (64 km/h) in second gear. The McLaren has a serious torque advantage over the Lamborghini and once it came on boost, easily sped past it.

The final face-off came in the form of a brake test, where the Lamborghini secured the win.

It is rather amazing just how fast the 720S is, even though its been two and a half years since its release. However, the successor to the aging Aventador will reportedly be a hybrid with upwards of 1,000 hp – and the game will start anew.

That’s 2-1 for the 720s, and that more than enough for me to take back home the Lambo if I could choose between them. lol

yep, I always choose the car with the better stopping power, means the engineers didn’t focus on just one thing

One looks every bit the stunning supercar, sounds every bit the stunning supercar, and is infinitely more desirable. Oh yeah, the other one’s a bit faster so you’ll always have that excuse as you cruise down Beverly Hills or wherever at 20mph.

While I would agree that McLarens like the Senna and 570S are quite unattractive, the 720S is really something special. If you have not seen it in person yet, I would hold off judgement. For one, it is a much smaller car than images might make it seem. The surfaces have some wild contours to them which really need to be seen in person to be appreciated. It truly is quite stunning. Here is a pic I took of one that displays just some of the complexity of the car’s form:

Agreed, that’s their best looking car and truly not half bad in person. Also, any excellent performing, mid-engine supercar will always have some appeal.
I’d still argue that in just the looks dept. it isn’t beautiful nor stunning enough rather, a kinda run-of-the-mill, effeminate, decent looking in that generic video-game sports car kinda way. In this class of cars and at these prices, I fully expect a drop dead gorgeous machine.

McLaren owners are getting as bad as Tesla owners showing off their one single trick.

A ten minute video, with about 30 seconds of screen time for those two gorgeous cars, and 9 1/2 minutes for those two very unattractive dudes.
