2020 Mercedes-AMG A 45 S Rules The Super Hatch Kingdom

The world’s media recently had the opportunity to test out the new Mercedes-AMG A 45 S for the very first time, and this video review reveals what you probably could have guessed: that it is extremely capable.

The headline of the new A 45 S, as well as the lesser A 45 (and the CLA 45 / 45 S) is the new M139 turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. In range-topping specification, this engine pumps out an impressive 415 HP and is coupled to an eight-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch transmission sending power to the tarmac via a fully variable Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system.

Mercedes-AMG says the new A 45 S will hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in a mere 3.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 167 mph (270 km/h). Those are very impressive figures indeed, though they only tell part of the story.

Incorporated into the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system is the AMG Torque Control system which uses two electronically controlled multidisc clutches to control the amount of torque sent to each individual rear wheel. This means the potent hot hatch has impeccable handling and is capable of some rather impressive feats. In fact, the reviewer in this video says that it virtually lacks any understeer.

Another interesting thing about the A 45 S is that it features a ‘Drift Mode’, not too dissimilar to what the one in the Ford Focus RS, that adds a level of excitement the (admittedly very good) previous iteration lacked.

I wonder why they never punched this engine out to lets say 2.2 liters? can it not take being punched? maybe this is a shared engine block? hmmm

    • Matteo Tommasi

This engine is the same as the normal Merc 2.0L, modular with the I6 3.0L and the AMG V8.

      • Andrewthecarguy

Good to know. Figured it was something like that.

        • Matt

          Because they don’t need to?

          • SteersUright

Sure they do. In the days of 800hp hellcats, 520hp 550i’s, etc., why not have an “AMG R” or “Black Series” version of this with 500hp?

          • Matt

Well yes if Mercedes sees fit to create overlap between their performance models, then they could make a more powerful version of the A45S. Of course it would be priced about the same as a C63 though…

And they could still do it with a 2.0. My point is they didn’t need to go to a 2.2 to get the power.

because taxes in different countries are based on engine size (making them more expensive).. thats why most engines these days say that they are 2 liter, but are just under in reality

    • SteersUright

You could make the same critique of all hot hatches, they all look like shoes. But the one car that looks like a sneaker to me more than any other car, is the new Supra. Don’t know what, something about the shape from certain angles looks either like Goofy from old Disney cartoons, or a bright yellow sneaker.

What else? A better exhaust note a la AMG

  • SteersUright

Cool car, much better looking than the sedan, at least in pictures. No joke, if they raised this 4 inches and called it a high performance CUV to challenge the Macan, people would love it in the USA.

A four-inch taller A45 already exists, its called the GLA45.
