The upcoming hypercar class that will replace LMP1 in to the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours from 2020 is promising to rejuvenate the sport.

Companies like Aston Martin, Toyota, and Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus have already confirmed they will participate in the series and now Lamborghini has revealed that it too could join them.

During an interview with Autocar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Lamborghini boss Stefano Domenicali said that the Italian car manufacturer is studying a potential shot at outright Le Mans glory.

“There are discussions and we are looking to understand the regulations to see if it is of interest,” he revealed. “There is nothing to say until the evaluation is finished, and at that point the answer could be yes or no. For now, it is possible.”

Domenicali says the company doesn’t have the budget to develop an all-new, limited-run hypercar to meet homologation requirements for the new class, but that “the SC18 shows that we have a base for what could be an interesting approach,” adding “the car shows that we have internal capabilities for such a project.”

Under the hypercar regulations, manufacturers must compete with a road car-based vehicle of which at least 20 street-legal models are built over a two-year period. The cars must have a maximum weight of 1100 kg (2425 lbs) and an average output of 738 hp. Hybrid systems are not mandatory but can be used and will be capped at 268 hp.
