GM’s Baojun 530 Gets Updated For The 2020MY In China

Launched in 2017 as a compact SUV exclusively for the Chinese market, the Baojun 530 has been updated for the 2020 model year.

Changes include the updated grille design, slimmer and longer headlights and new bumper at the front, whereas the silver trim added at the back and new wheels complete the more dynamic look.

Inside, the 2020 Baojun 530 features a 10.4-inch touchscreen display that supports over-the-air updates and can be used to control different functions, such as the air conditioning, navigation, infotainment and others. It also supports voice commands, so users need to give the right command to activate the HVAC, play music, send messages via WeChat and open or close the sunroof. Other features included are the digital dials, heated mirrors, tire pressure monitoring system and parking sensors.

It can be had with three different seating configurations: 2+3, 2+2+2 or 2+3+2, with the former offering 979 mm (38.5 in) of space between the first and second rows and a cargo capacity of up to 1,065 liters (37.6 cu-ft).

Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, which kicks out 147 PS (145 HP / 108 kW) at 5,200 rpm and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque between 2,200 and 3,400 rpm that’s hooked up to either a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture has started taking orders for the updated 530, whose pricing spans between RMB 77,800 and 99,800, equal to $10,985-$14,090 at current exchange rates.

Which clearly begs the question why can’t America get something so reasonably priced as this (albeit unattractive)? Short answer: because every single CUV-producing manufacturer is greedy. I am finally seeing Chevy Equinoxes/GMC Terrains (but no others) discounted over $10K, so maybe it’s a start.

Because it’s designed for the low end of the Chinese market and other developing markets, and as such likely does not meet various federal requirements?

This stream of consciousness is wild.
The Baojun 530 is the base model, and therefore the original and oldest of the lot. The current Chevrolet Captiva, Wuling Almaz, and MG Hector are rebadges of it and in most cases built in the same Chinese factory. As such, the current Captiva has nothing to do with Korea in any way, will never be offered in Europe or North America, and isn’t engineered to be available with 4WD.

The Chinese Captiva was never sold in Brazil or Argentina. It is sold in other South American countries.

Nicer than nearly every GM on sale, especially with that massive Tesla-like screen inside. Not beautiful, but a step up from american GM offerings.
