German Cops Seized This Gold Wrapped BMW X5 M Because It Was Too Shiny

Germany is the birthplace of the automobile, but authorities are pretty strict when it comes to tuning.

Case in point, the Düsseldorf police launched a crackdown on modified vehicles over the weekend and “secured” five different models for inspection by an expert.

One of them wasn’t hard to miss as it was a BMW X5 M with a gold wrap. As the department noted in a press release, it got the “undivided attention” of officers as it “blazed clearly in the corresponding sunlight.”

Bright wraps are a no-no in Germany as authorities say they can cause a “dazzling effect” which can endanger other drivers. In a case earlier this year, the owner of a gold Porsche Panamera had their keys and license plate confiscated and were told they couldn’t drive the vehicle until the wrap was removed.

Getting back to the X5 M, authorities also found the vehicle was equipped with tinted taillights and a “manipulated exhaust system.” Police said the driver was a 30-year-old from Kosovo who claimed to be unaware of Germany’s strict tuning laws. While that could be true, they didn’t let the driver off easy.

According to DW, police determined the vehicle was unsafe to drive and it was towed away from the scene. As a result, the driver had to find another way home.

‘Manipulated?’ That’s somehow German for rusted aht and janky?

    • David Bege

That’s not rust as such, although there is some surface rust on the extremely crude welds. This guys merely done a woeful backyard job of removing baffles or cat material from the exhaust.

Shiny wraps like that shouldn’t be legal here in the states either.

    Being ugly wasn’t enough?

I wonder if someone painted his car in vantaBlack, would they also seize the car? I mean its also very distracting since its… Too Dark you know.

    • H.P. Loathecraft

No Vanta black should not be street legal.

      • Bash

True, it’s as distracting as a shiny foil, it could be more distracting too.

        • The issue is not being distracting in a sense making you look at it. The problem with chrome is when the sun shines it can easily hit you at an angle rendering you blind. Vanta black could be a problem at night when parked on the side of the road…

          • Bash

Excellent comment. You are absolutely right.

  • ThatGuy

Gold wrap and chrome panted cars, should for all intents and purposes be used as show cars.
On the road i cannot agree with having, i remember being at a car show and there was a chrome Corvette driving around, for show naturally, but a few passes later the glare of the car have hardcore, now imagine that in traffic.
    No thanks

Germany, the land of crap food and no fun

    • Squeaky_1

      They do have autobahns, they’re fun . . . so there’s at least that . . .

    • HaltestelleLuitpolthafen

Sounds like you’ve never been to Germany…

      • Howfarr

Spent 3 months there this year so far… autobahns are overrated, if there’s not someone blocking the fast lane then there is someone flashing at you to move even if you’re doing 200kph.
German food isn’t good, I guess that’s why they love Greek food so much, also in towns in Germany its pretty difficult to find traditional German restaurants

To be fair, tinting the tail light on some German cars it actually improves road safety. Up till a few years ago, they had blinding brake and position lights, those LEDs were dialed up to 11 for some reason.

    • It really is strange why they did that. A few months ago a friend of mine was driving behind me and complained that every time I would brake it would trigger his emergency stop assistant.

  • H.P. Loathecraft

I encountered one in a royal blue chrome wrap. In late afternoon sunlight from a particular angle it effectively blinded me momentarily. I wondered at the time how long this will be allowed on the street. My jurisdiction has limits on window tinting so why not blinding wraps?
