There were a handful of limited-edition Nissan Skyline GT-R models built over the decades that really captured the world’s attention. The ultra-rare R34 Z-Tune is the most desirable of them all.

Nissan and Nismo built the first Z-Tune back in 2003 as a way to send-off the R34-generation model in style but by the time the green light was given to put the Z-Tune into production, the R34 had already reached the end of its production run.

Not willing to call it quits, Nismo purchased 12 used Skyline R34 GT-R V-Spec models each with less than 18,000 miles (29,000 km) on the clock and turned them into Z-Tunes. The remaining 7 cars were donated by owners who wanted to convert their V-Spec models into Z-Tune cars. All up, just 19 examples were built including two prototypes.

Comprehensive modifications were made over all other R34 variations. Most notably, the RB26DETT engine was overhauled with new parts including upgraded turbochargers. Displacement was also increased to 2.8-liters allowing Nismo to extract a claimed 500 hp. Bold claims have been made by Nismo about the car’s performance, including a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.8 seconds, a top speed north of 327 km/h (203 mph), and a quarter-mile time in an incredible 10.06 seconds.

All examples were painted silver except for one that remained finished in Midnight Purple III. Recently, one of the silver examples underwent a comprehensive restoration in Japan and was re-sprayed Midnight Purple III. It now resides in Melbourne, Australia and could very well be the most expensive R34 GT-R on earth, valued at well over $500,000.

This example also benefits from some minor modifications and during a recent dyno run, delivered an impressive 351 kW (477 hp) at the wheels.
