Alongside the regular powertrains of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA, the automaker also debuts the GLA 35 entry-level AMG model today.

Going by the full name of Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC, this performance model is the seventh member of the automaker’s compact family to wear the ’35’ designation, following the A-Class hatch, A-Class sedan, A-Class L sedan for China, CLA Coupe, CLA Shooting Brake, and GLB SUV.

As with these models, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 306 PS (302 HP) at 5,800 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque at 3,000 – 4,000 rpm.

The engine is hooked to an eight-speed AMG Speedshift DCT 8G dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual mode that sends power to all four wheels via the standard-fit AMG Performance 4MATIC variable all-wheel drive.

Thanks to this setup and the Race-Start launch control function that also comes standard, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds, with the top speed electronically limited at 250 km/h (155 mph).

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35’s superior performance compared to non-AMG models is reflected in its design too, as the model features unique styling tweaks that differentiate it from lesser versions. Those include the AMG-specific ‘Panamericana’ radiator grille, front splitter in silver chrome (optionally in high-gloss black), the trim of the louvers in the outer air inlets, and the exclusive 19-inch wheels.

The rims feature a five-twin-spoke design and are painted in tantalum grey with a high-sheen finish. Needless to say, they are available in larger 20- and 21-inch sizes as well. The GLA 35 also features silver chrome inserts (available also in high-gloss black) on the door handles, a new diffuser insert in the rear apron, AMG spoiler lip on the roof, and two round tailpipes.

Inside, the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 spices up the high-tech ambience of the MBUX infotainment system’s fully-digital displays with several sporty features. Highlights include sport seats in Artico man-made leather/Dinamica microfiber with red topstitching and seat belts, AMG multifunction sports steering wheel in Nappa leather, carbon fiber trim, brushed stainless steel sports pedals, and a series of red accents.

Other features worth mentioning include the AMG Dynamic Select with five drive programs (Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual), AMG Dynamics integrated dynamic handling control system, steering with special rack and variable ratio, upgraded braking system and AMG suspension tuned for high cornering speeds. The AMG Ride Control adaptive damping system is optional.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA, including the AMG GLA 35 variant, will reach European dealers in early 2020 and will launch in the United States in the summer.
