Ferrari will go after the likes of the Lamborghini Urus and Aston Martin DBX with their own SUV, the Purosangue, which is expected to premiere in 2021.

The first high-riding vehicle in the company’s 80-year old history might use a modified version of the platform that debuted in the Roma, according to AutoExpress, who spoke to CTO Michael Lieters at the presentation of the GT.

“In general, we will have two families of architecture – front- and rear-engine families”, he said. “The modularity is there, and especially on the front-engined architecture we have to foresee many more models. We have a 2+2, we have a 4+, we are thinking about Purosangue and so on.”

The new architecture has been engineered to work with V6, V8 and V12 engines, as well as electrified powertrains, and while the Purosangue will probably not get the twelve-banger, it could launch with a plug-in hybrid.

Ferrari has previously stated that its V12s aren’t going anywhere, for now at least, and the next model powered by such a mill is perhaps the new Ferrari hypercar. The firm’s chief marketing officer, Enrico Galliera, confirmed that they’re already working on it, stating that it won’t launch before 2022.

The flagship model is thought to arrive with a lightweight construction and focus on improved aerodynamics and superior handling. Electrifying the V12 is not on the agenda, according to Galliera, as it would add unnecessary weight.
