Could Ford, like so many other carmakers, have understated the power of one of its performance vehicles, namely the Mustang Shelby GT500? Based on this video, it would appear so.

The following Mustang GT500 is owned by young YouTuber Speed Phenom and was recently strapped onto a dyno to see how much power it sends through the rear wheels. As a reminder, Ford claims the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine is good for 760 hp and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) of torque.

In the most representative of two power runs, the GT500 delivered an impressive 705 hp through the rear wheels. Unfortunately, no torque figure is mentioned. Nonetheless, if the car has a typical 15 per cent drivetrain loss, that means the supercharged V8 engine may in fact pump out more than 800 hp and perhaps even as much as 825 hp.

Of course, it is impossible to tell precisely how much power the pony car pumps out as calculating the drivetrain loss through the dual-clutch seven-speed transmission is no easy task. To really find out how powerful Ford’s new flagship performance engine is, you’d have to take out the engine and strap it onto a dedicated dyno. Obviously, that is never going to happen.

Early performance tests of the Shelby GT500 have revealed that it can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in the mid-3 second range and power down the quarter-mile in 10.7 or 10.8-seconds, very impressive times for a vehicle that is rear-wheel drive and at a claimed 4,225 lbs (1,916 kg), is very heavy.
