The latest technological advancements in the automotive industry have made cars more quiet, so road noise is more noticeable than ever, but not if Hyundai and Harman can do something about it.

The two companies teamed up to develop what they call “the world’s first active road noise cancellation system for a production vehicle”. The system brags about reducing unwanted noise up to 50 percent and has already been fitted to the Genesis GV80, the luxury brand’s first SUV.

It’s called the ‘Road-Noise Active Noise Control’, or ‘RANC’ in short, and counters the unwanted noise by emitting soundwaves in real-time. Sensors placed along the chassis and suspension of the GV80 send data to the RANC control processor, which in turn predicts the noise transferred into the cabin and generates an anti-noise wave within milliseconds, thus cocooning occupants from the outside environment. The vehicle also features error microphones that monitor the system performance in each seat to ensure a more pleasant journey.

Unveiled a couple of weeks ago in Korea and set to reach our shores this summer, the GV80 is Genesis’ answer to other luxury mid-size SUV such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It sports a modern look all around and a simple cabin layout with a raised center console, free-standing infotainment system, two-spoke steering wheel and lots of premium materials.

The 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline unit, rated at 300 HP, alongside the 3.5-liter V6 gasoline with 370+ HP, are expected to be offered in the U.S. In Korea, there will also be a 3.0-liter turbodiesel with 274 hp. Rear-wheel drive will be a standard feature, but buyers can also get the optional all-wheel drive system.
