Porsche has produced some of the finest endurance race cars ever and these renderings show what a retro-inspired racer could look like today if built by the German brand.

The man behind this car, dubbed the Porsche 906 Hommage, is Riccardo Angelini, the lead exterior designer for Tata Motors Italy who also penned a particularly wild Koenigsegg hypercar concept not too long ago.

The original Porsche 906 was first announced in January 1966 and was built as a replacement to the Porsche 904 by none other than Ferdinand Porsche, the grandson of Ferdinand Piech. Approximately 50 examples were produced and the 906’s exterior design served as a big influence on Angelini’s recreation.

Two different forms of the 906 Hommage have been rendered. The first adopts a more subtle approach and has seen the original sleek bodywork of the 906 retained but modernized with new LED headlights and taillights. The second variation is dubbed the 906 Hommage Florio and has a much more dramatic look with a key focus on aerodynamics. Parts that immediately catch the eye about this version is the front splitter, huge side air intakes, a large rear wing, and a rear diffuser to produce huge amounts of downforce.

While most of the renderings show the car finished in a dark shade of red, there is a handful that shows it with a Gulf Racing livery that suits the personality of the car to a tee.

Porsche was one of the automaker’s originally involved in the formation of the forthcoming Hypercar class at Le Mans but has not committed to the series. If it were to compete in a vehicle like this, it could help fill the void left behind by Aston Martin’s decision to pull the plug on its Valkyrie Le Mans racer.
