Last September, Bugatti unveiled a pre-production Chiron Super Sport 300+ and confirmed the model become the first hypercar to break the 300 mph (482.8 km/h) barrier by going 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h).

A week later, the company announced plans for a limited edition “visually based on the record-breaking car.” Spy photographers have now snapped a mysterious prototype that bears a resemblance to the upcoming model.

As you can see, the prototype remains pretty faithful to the record-breaker as it has a familiar front bumper and circular fender vents. However, there are some minor differences including a small opening beneath the horseshoe grille.

Bigger changes occur out back as the prototype isn’t extended like the record-breaking model. The car also has a unique dual exhaust system and a massive diffuser.

These changes are notable and they suggest the prototype is an all-new special edition as the Chiron Super Sport 300+ has a stacked four-tailpipe exhaust system and a different diffuser than what’s seen on this prototype.  That model also retains the Longtail rear end, but it incorporates some of the changes seen up front.

While we’re not sure what this prototype is for, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ will be launched in mid-2021 and have an upgraded powertrain that produces 1,578 hp (1,176 kW / 1,600 PS). Only 30 units will be built and each will cost €3.5 ($3.8 / £3.1) million.
