After extending their partnership until 2029, Audi and European soccer giants FC Bayern Munich have begun working on electrifying the latter’s training grounds with EV charging points.

FC Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, board member Oliver Kahn and Audi exec Hildegard Wortmann all signed off on the charging points project, which will total 38 units – set to go online later this summer.

This means that the infrastructure will be ready in time for the start of the next Bundesliga season, which will feature FC Bayern players driving the Audi e-tron, and charging their SUVs with up to 150 kW at the club’s underground garage on Sabener Strasse.

Starting next year, Audi also wants to equip the Allianz Arena in Munich with charging points, to the benefit of both fans and visitors. Furthermore, the German carmaker and FC Bayern will work together strategically on new marketing campaigns that focus on electrification in particular.

More than half of the club’s Audi fleet will be electrified as of this year, allowing Bayern to lower its fleet emissions to less than 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, thus adhering to new European regulations that come into effect in January 2021.

As far as the Audi e-tron range is concerned, the carmaker recently unveiled e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback variants, packing system outputs of 370 kW (496 HP / 503 PS) and 717 lb-ft (973 Nm) of torque. That type of grunt allows for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).
