The unveiling of the Volkswagen ID.4 yesterday sparked so much interest in the electric SUV that the official reservations website in the United States crashed.

The automaker apologized on social media, coming back with another tweet two hours later announcing that they’re online again for those who wish to secure a build slot for a refundable $100 fee.

In the meantime, the ID.4 1st Edition, which is the first model that will launch early next year with standard Statement and Gradient packages, special visual accents, 20-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, illuminated grille and panoramic fixed glass roof, has already sold out.

This version has an MSRP of $43,995, excluding the potential government incentive of up to $7,500, while the ID.4 Pro is listed from $39,995. The lesser variant features front and rear LED lights, 19-inch alloy wheels, illuminated door handles, 10-inch infotainment system, digital gauges, leather-wrapped and heated multi-function steering wheel, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, etc. The blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, lane assist, emergency assist, travel assist, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control are also included.

The Statement Package costs $4,500 and adds the special exterior touches, panoramic fixed glass roof, 12-way power-adjustable front seats wrapped in leatherette, 12-inch infotainment system and hands-free tailgate. The Statement & Gradient Package brings all of the above, as well as the black-finished roof, silver roof rails and accents, and 20-inch alloy wheels, in return for $6,000.

The ID.4 Pro is offered with a single electric motor, driving the rear wheels, with 201 HP and 228 lb-ft (309 Nm) of torque, which is powered by an 82 kWh battery pack for an EPA-estimated 250-mile (402-km) range. The dual-motor variant, with electric AWD, will launch in mid-2021 with a combined 302 HP.
