Ducati has already started production for the fourth-generation Multistrada V4 model at its factory in Borgo Panigale. The V4 is the world’s first bike to feature front and rear radar technology, and will be unveiled officially on November 4.

The model also boasts a new and compact V4 engine, with specs and other details to be revealed next week on October 15, ahead of the official unveiling.

Of course, the main talking point here is the radar tech, which should revolutionize the world of motorcycles by making long motorway journeys safer and more comfortable.

Ducati has been working on radar tech for their bikes since 2016. Since then, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer developed and produced this riding assistance package (consisting of two radars) in close cooperation with Bosch.

Each radar unit measures 70 x 60 x 28 mm (similar to a modern action camera), and integrates perfectly into the bike, weighing just 190 grams. The unit at the front controls the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which in turn adjusts the distance from other vehicles when riding at speeds between 30 (18 mph) and 160 km/h (100 mph).

Meanwhile, the rear radar is able to detect and report vehicles coming into your blind spot – the Blind Spot Detection system also signals vehicles approaching from behind at high speed.

In order to underline the technical and scientific value of this project (carried out jointly by Ducati and researchers and undergraduates from the Politecnico di Milano), a patent application relating to the control algorithms of this system was filed back in May of 2017.
