The Volkswagen ID.3 has achieved a five-star rating at Euro NCAP, with the safety body’s tester’s acknowledging that it “does not compromise in this regard”.

The Pro-specification version of the electric hatch scored 87 percent in Adult Occupant, 89 percent in Child Occupant and 71 percent in Pedestrian protection and 88 percent in the Safety Assist category.

Euro NCAP noted that the passenger dummy’s protection of the critical body areas was ‘good’, whereas the driver’s chest was rated as ‘marginal’, in the offset frontal test. Protection of the knees and femurs were also adequate, while the car’s front-end structure did not excessively deform in the test barrier. The ID.3 scored well in the side barrier and side pole impacts too.

“The ID.3 represents the direction of travel for the car industry in recent years. The climate crisis means that we all must adapt to a cleaner future, and electric cars will become the norm in the years to come”, said Euro NCAP’s secretary general, Michiel van Ratingen. “Euro NCAP will continue to ensure that saving the planet does not come at the cost of safety, and I am glad to see that the ID.3 – the latest generation of the people’s car – does not compromise in this regard.”

Based on the VW Group’s MEB platform, exclusive to EVs, the ID.3 is the German brand’s first model in the ID family. It is priced from £32,990 ($46,055) in the United Kingdom and €35,574.95 ($41,988) in Germany, and has a 201-horsepower electric motor, powered by the 58 kWh or a 77 kWh battery, with the latter offering a 336-mile (541-km) range in the WLTP cycle. The ID.3 will launch with less power and 45 kWh batteries in 2021.
