Lordstown Motors has found something fun to do with one of its prototypes. The company is taking the Endurance Beta skateboard to Baja California to race in the San Felipe 250.

As the first event in the SCORE World Desert Championship series for 2021, the race will welcome some of the world’s best off-road racers. That makes it the perfect place to test the Endurance pickup’s platform, according to Lordstown Motors CEO Steve Burns.

“We feel that it is quite a significant milestone for the electric vehicle community that an electric pickup truck can compete in an environment as demanding as Baja California,” said Burns. “Our goal is to be the first electric vehicle to ever complete the San Felipe 250, and with the superior traction, weight balance, and advanced software control of our hub motor-based Endurance, we are confident that we will do just that.”

As the name suggests, the race starts and ends in San Felipe, Mexico, on the Baja peninsula. As the name doesn’t suggest, it runs in a single, 290-mile-long loop. Taking place in the same location as the Baja 1000, the truck will have to compete in one of the most demanding locales on earth.

The Lordstown Endurance pickup truck’s chassis will have a few advantages and one obvious disadvantage. The EV has a naturally-low center of gravity thanks to the position of its 109 kWh battery back. Although it will have to find a way to protect those batteries, having the weight down low in the vehicle tends to help with handling and performance. Its motors are also located in the wheels, which gives the truck e-AWD. More than that, though, each motor should be individually controllable, which should help in low grip situations.

The Endurance, though, is only rated at 250 miles of range, which will presumably be lower in a racing scenario. With the race lasting 290 miles, planning and charging will be very important. To be fair, though, planning is always extremely important in off-road racing.

Unfortunately, Lordstown doesn’t have any pictures of its off-road racer yet because, they told us, it’s currently being built. They have shared these videos of the alpha platform testing though, which hint at the vehicle’s capabilities.

The San Felipe 250 race will take place on April 17, 2021.
