The Lotus Evija has just taken home an International Design Award, winning the Product Design of the Year category. The jury, which comprised judges from five diverse disciplines – Architecture, Fashion, Interior, Product, and Graphic Design — awarded the electric supercar the title of “the world’s most premium sustainable car.”

The Ejiva hasn’t yet been delivered to customers, as due to the pandemic production was pushed back to mid-2021. It is the first all-electric car for the British brand and features four electric motors, which Lotus claims give it a combined output of 2000 hp (2029 PS) and 1243 lb-ft of torque.

The 0 to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint takes less than 3 seconds, while at full tilt, it will do over 200 mph (320 km/h). As for the electric hypercar’s predicted driving range, you’re looking at approximately 250 miles (400 km).

Crafted from carbon fiber, the bodywork aims to reduce weight in as many areas as possible — a necessary factor due to the car’s heavy batteries, which fly in the face of Colin Chapman’s original philosophy of “simplify, then add lightness.” Nevertheless, although not light by ICE standards, the 3700 lb (1678 kg) Evija is allegedly the lightest hypercar to enter production.

The IDA jury also noted that the Evija “paves a way towards a more sustainable future whilst embodying an exceptional aerodynamic aesthetic.” The award comes during an interesting year in Lotus’ history. In 2021 it bids adieu to the Elise and Exige, the former after an incredible 25-year run. The Evija represents a way for the Norfolk-based brand to reinvent itself, ahead of launching a new hybrid sports car in 2022.

“Everyone at Lotus is honored to receive this award,” says Russell Carr, Director of Design, Lotus. “The Evija is an incredibly important car for Lotus; it is inspired by our innovative past and is the ultimate statement of intent for our ambitious and exciting future.”
