China’s New R ES33 Concept Has A 4D Radar That Can Detect A Can Of Coke Nearly 500 ft Away

Chinese automaker SAIC has unveiled a new concept from its R brand, dubbed the ES33, that is set to spawn a production variant in the second half of 2022.

The key feature of the R ES33 is its comprehensive suite of autonomous driving systems, made up of no less than 33 sensors, including a 4D imaging radar, Luminar lidar, laser radar, ultrasonic radar, and advanced chips from Nvidia. The concept also uses advanced 5G-V2X technology to communicate with other vehicles and the world around it. SAIC claims the 4D imaging radar is so advanced it can detect a can of coke from 140 meters (459 feet) away, Car News China reports.

Car designers in China have really stepped up their game in recent years and the ES33 certainly looks distinctive. As it is all-electric, the front end lacks a traditional grille but includes sleek LED daytime running lights. Designers have also nailed the sides of the concept, crafting sharp lines and creased surfaces that extend back to the rear haunches, while the A-pillars seem to be quite thin.

As impressive as the front and sides of the ES33 are, it is perhaps the rear that is the most eye-catching, thanks to a trick 3D LED light bar that protrudes out from the rest of the bodywork.

SAIC has not yet outlined the powertrain that will be used by the production model but it should offer a range of up to 434 miles (700 km) on the NEDC cycle. SAIC is also working on battery-swap technology that would enable replacing the battery pack in as little as two minutes.
