The Grand Tour’s James May was recently featured in a catch-up video with DriveTribe. Among other anecdotal titbits that only May could deliver in his signature way, he shared some insight into the challenges faced while filming the Grand Tour’s latest episode.

The yet-to-be-released Scottish caper was filmed during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which evidently didn’t make things easy for the production team. The COVID bubble allowed only a skeletal crew to be within close quarters, making the show a challenge to film.

May recalls how the crew underwent daily COVID-19 tests and how the team had to put their health at risk and maintain a determined mindset to get the job done. “Have I got COVID? No. Keep going for another day”, May said. Even with all the difficulties, he was pleased with the outcome: “It’s an interesting idea, the scenery was great, obviously – it’s Scotland.”

For 2021, May hints about the team is working on another Grand Tour episode but keeps much to himself. He also says he is eager to begin another travel show after the success of “James May: Our Man In Japan”, but the apparent restrictions have prevented Amazon from making it their prime focus.

May also discusses the story of how his precious 458 Speciale was abandoned. Prior to the first UK lockdown, James recalls how his Ferrari had been “locked away” at the service center he had given it to. James explains how getting the car back wasn’t a possibility due to travel restrictions, and that since his return he has been driving it around his garage.

When asked what would be the result if he was given a blank cheque to invest in something entirely to his liking, James states that the projects he is currently working on satisfy his automotive and travel interests. If he were to invest in something, it would probably be much more introverted. “I’d like an animal sanctuary,” he said, in typical James May fashion.
