The first-generation Toyota 86 had a long and successful production run and was only ever available as a coupe. This will, in all likelihood, be the case for its successor, although that hasn’t stopped X-Tomi Design from imagining what the new GR 86 would look like as a droptop.

Toyota hasn’t given any indication that it plans on producing a convertible variant of the GR 86 but the exterior design of the sports car does lend itself quite well to having the roof removed and replaced with either a fabric soft top or (less likely) a folding hardtop.

To create the open-top GR 86, X-Tomi Design digitally removed the roof, but if Toyota were to make a convertible version a reality, it would have to make various other modifications to the car, including strengthening the chassis to make up for the loss in rigidity.

While we have little doubt that Toyota could sell a GR 86 Convertible, it won’t happen. The market for compact sports cars is shrinking, so the mere fact that Toyota still has faith in them is good enough for us, even though an open-top would be appreciated.
