While most auto companies are chasing after the booming crossover and SUV segments, DS thought it would have a chance at launching an executive car.

Despite being closely related to the mid-size 508, the DS 9 is actually based on its longwheelbase “L” version and sits one segment above. This means that it’s an executive model with high aspirations, as it has the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Jaguar XF and Audi A6 in its sights.

The spiritual successor of the Citroen C6 doesn’t look anything like the Germans inside, as its design is similar to other DS models. Equipment is generous, with leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front and rear seats with massage function, night vision camera, automatic parking assist and level 2 semi-autonomous driving. You also get a clever suspension that helps smoothen bumps in the road, and smart headlights.

DS is offering the 9 with a 225 PS (222 HP / 165 kW) four-pot PureTech petrol engine, and two E-Tense plug-in hybrids, with either 225 PS (222 HP / 165 kW) or 335 HP (360 PS / 265 kW), the latter of which comes with all-wheel drive.

In the United Kingdom, the 2021 DS 9 is available in two trim levels. The petrol engine starts at £40,615 ($56,438) and the 225 PS PHEV at £46,100 ($64,060) in the Performance Line + grade, while the more upmarket Rivoli + is priced from £44,715 ($62,135) and £49,200 ($68,367) respectively.
