Criticisms of his new VinFast car got YouTuber Tran Van Hoang into some trouble recently as the carmaker was so offended by his criticisms that they called the cops on him.

In a now-deleted video, Hoang said he was proud to own a VinFast LUX A2.0 and was only reluctantly highlighting problems. In a statement to Reuters, though, VinFast said it had “sufficient grounds to prove that it is not just a normal complaint.”

In the 29 minute video, as translated by YouTube, Hoang complains of faults in the tire pressure sensor, the windshield wipers, the wireless phone charger, squeaking doors, and he complains about his experience with the dealer, among other things.

In a statement on May 2, the company wrote that the video posted by Hoang contained “untrue content” that could have “affected the reputation of VinFast.” The company added that, although the video had been deleted, it had saved evidence and sent it to the police, though it did not specify which branch of the police.

“The police have received our submission and have scheduled a time to work with Mr. Hoang,” the company wrote.

The YouTuber does have a fair number of subscribers (455,000), so VinFast’s dismay at his criticism is, perhaps understandable. The move to involve the police, though, is unusual.

“This is the first time we have reported someone to the authorities in order to protect our reputation and our customers,” VinFast told Reuters.

The company, founded by Vietnam’s richest man, plans to sell its electric vehicles in North America and Europe soon. It said it would pursue people who made similar issues there in the same way.

“If a similar incident were to occur when operating in the United States, we will also submit a request to the authorities in accordance with local law, and to protect our legal rights”.
