A little over a month after BMW released their own “spy” shots of the disguised 2-Series, our photographers have managed to snag some more detailed pictures of the upcoming coupe. The photos give us one of the last unofficial looks at the 2022 2-Series coupe before an official reveal at Goodwood on the 8th of July, 2021.

Both these spy shots, and of course, those revealing images of the car from over a year ago, the headline would appear to be confirmation that BMW’s spiritual 3-series successor shows restraint when it comes to the size of those kidney grilles, ensuring that not only does the 3/4-Series remain, erm, unique, but that the 2-Series actually has a decent shot of being a good-looking car from Bavaria.

Also, clearer is the shape of the headlights, again more restrained in their appearance. Perhaps surprisingly, the design — the outline especially — appears more similar to that found on the F30 3-Series, produced between 2011-2019.

Under the hood, BMW has already confirmed that there will be an M240i xDrive Coupe that will fill the void while we wait for an M2. The 2022 M240i xDrive will feature a TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine that produces 368 hp (275 kW/374 PS), coupled with an 8-speed transmission and M-Sport rear differential. Expect four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive models to be on offer as well.

Other options will include an M-Sports chassis and variable steering. Having been honed at the Nürburgring, the 2-Series coupe will be 12% stiffer than the outgoing car while sporting a wider track for better road-holding.

The wraps will be officially taken off the new 2-Series at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed, with the 2-Series Coupe joining Toyota’s GR 86 in the “first glimpse” category, charging up the 1.16-mile hill course on the Thursday.
