Lexus is readying a new LX based on the latest-generation Toyota Land Cruiser and it could be topped by a powerful hybrid model.

A report out of Japan claims that the new Lexus LX will have the same underpinnings as the Land Cruiser and that like it, it will be powered by a new twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 that replaces the previous-generation 5.7-liter V8. This new engine will apparently power the new LX 600 variant, while sitting above it will be the LX 750h.

Japanese publication Creative311 claims that the LX 750h will combine this twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor to deliver a combine 480 hp and 642 lb-ft (871 Nm) of torque. Both LX 600 and LX 750h models will come exclusively with a 10-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels.

Lexus will make a plethora of other modifications to ensure the new LX is worth the price premium over the Land Cruiser on which it is based. Many of these upgrades will be made to the cabin where, according to some reports, the LX may feature a massive 17-inch infotainment screen. The luxurious off-roader may also feature a fingerprint scanner to start the engine, although it’s possible this technology will only be offered in select markets.

Various visual changes will also be made. During the unveiling of the new NX, Lexus appeared to offer the world a glimpse of the new LX under a sheet, revealing sharp LED daytime running lights but not much more.

Lexus will allegedly unveil the new LX in September, with sales to commence in December.
