The BMW E30 M3 has become a real collector’s car in recent years and a particularly clean Johnny Cecotto variant is currently up for sale in the UK.

Johnny Cecotto was a racing prodigy and at the age of 19, won the motorcycle road racing world championship. He later went on to compete in Formula 1 and various other championships, including DTM where he raced the BMW M3 for a handful of seasons. The Johnny Cecotto variant of the M3 was unveiled in 1989 and, as you’ve probably guessed, paid tribute to him.

This special variant benefited from a handful of changes over lesser versions of the M3. For example, it was the first version of the E30 M3 to introduce the upgraded S14 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that pumped out 215 hp and was later used in all other M3 models. Each car also came with body-colored valve covers and intake manifold, with customers able to spec the car in either Misano Red, Macao Blue, or Nogaro Silver.

The car also includes 16-inch BBS wheels with metallic black centers, chrome tailpipes, thinner rear window glass, the Evolution II aerodynamics package, and fog lights.

This M3 Johnny Cecotto being sold by Fast Classics is number 341 of just 480 examples produced (excluding the subsequent 25 Ravaglia Editions) and spent its formative years in Germany before being imported to the UK in 1997 with roughly 98,000 km (60,894 miles) on the clock. It was then converted to a mph speedometer and has been fastidiously maintained. It currently has an indicated 87,045 miles (140,000 km) on the odometer and an asking price of £84,995 ($118,376).
