It seems that Mercedes is testing the upcoming G-Class 4×4² in various different colors, as the latest spy photos show a matte military-style wrap. The hardcore off-roader, which is set to dial up the already impressive capabilities of the G-Wagen to eleven, is expected for a full reveal at the Munich Motor Show in September alongside the fully electric EQG.

The new-generation 4×4² was first spied back in October 2020 in black. A month later, another prototype was spied at the Nurburgring dressed in white, before heading up for cold-weather testing in January 2021. Then a blue G-Class 4×4² appeared in February 2021 driving through the snow, followed by another one in bright orange.

Like the previous iterations, the new prototype is wearing the AMG-styled front bumper with large intakes, wide fender extensions, an external spare tire, an integrated ladder at the back, and a steel roof rack. The matte paint fits nicely with the blacked-up details although some black-tape camouflage is still visible in the grille and body kit.

Compared to its predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz G500 / G550 4×4², the new one will sit on the later ladder-frame chassis introduced by the G-Class W463 in 2018. It will retain the massive ground clearance, the chunky off-road tires, and the signature portal axles that will make it virtually unstoppable off the beaten track.

The 4×4² variant is expected to bear the Mercedes-AMG badge and it will probably be fitted with the G-Wagen’s most powerful engine. This means it could get the biturbo 4.0-liter V8, which produces 577 HP (585 PS / 430 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque in the current Mercedes-AMG G63.

While the 4×4² will be slower than the G63 due to the increased weight, the all-terrain tires, and the added drag, it will still be quite fast for its size. We are sure that after the official reveal, tuners like Brabus will quickly present their own versions of the 4×4² with even more power and torque.
