Jeep is sending two Wrangler 4xe SUVs out into the wild with new technologies aimed at delivering more information about the road to drivers.

The Wranglers will be testing new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies for Stellantis and will focus on two functions specifically. The first will utilize the cameras already installed at intersections to give more information to the vehicle and its driver about potential safety hazards before they can actually see them.

The second will send in-vehicle alerts to drivers when an emergency vehicle is nearby or when other roadway blockages are detected. This is not dissimilar to technologies that Audi has been developing that deliver information about traffic lights and even school zones to drivers.

Stellantis‘ technology, though, will use Multi-access Edge Computing and Safety Cloud technology. Working with the 5G Automotive Association, Stellantis will be able to work with telecommunications companies like Verizon, Telus, Harman, Altran, and American Tower to develop its V2X capabilities.

“Greater connectivity speeds, improved hardware, and expanded software expertise have opened new opportunities for Stellantis with safety systems being one of the many areas we focus on,” said Mamatha Chamarthi, Head of Software Business and Product Management. “Through smart and strategic partnerships, we will capitalize on next-generation systems and prove out the technology.”

Stellantis expects the technology to be ready to launch nationwide within the next decade.
