A 2022 Kia EV6 has set a new Guinness World Record by driving across the United States with the shortest amount of charging time of any electric vehicle.

The car manufacturer drove an EV6 from New York City to Los Angeles over seven days and during the 2,880.5-mile trip, the car was only plugged in for 7 hours, 10 minutes and 1 second. This allowed the Kia EV6 to beat the previous record-holder held by a Tesla at 12 hours, 48 minutes and 19 seconds.

“The EV6’s record-setting run is the latest signal that Kia will be a leader in the popularization of electric vehicles, vice president of marketing at Kia America, Russell Wager said. “All of Kia’s world-class engineering and experience in electric vehicles will be applied in the move to electrification. The same attention to detail, design, quality, technology and driving dynamics that Kia has become known for will be found in every new electric vehicle we bring to market.”

While Kia may now hold the Guinness certified world record, it is unclear if it holds the outright record for the shortest amount of charging time needed for an EV to cross the United States. A couple of weeks ago, a Tesla Model S Long Range crossed the U.S. in 42 hours and 17 minutes, setting a record for an EV. It spent 7 hours and 12 minutes charging. It’s possible other runs have been recorded with less than 7 hours of charging time needed.

Nonetheless, achieving a Guinness World Record is an impressive feat for the Kia EV6 and also serves to demonstrate how much better non-Tesla charging stations have become in the last couple of years.
