There has been no shortage of interest at this year’s SEMA show, but one of the most interesting exhibits was Chevrolet’s 1,004 hp (1,017 PS/749 kW) ZZ632 crate engine.

Displacing 10.35 liters without any form of forced induction, it’s easy to see why Chevrolet calls it their “biggest, baddest big-block ever.” But no price was announced when it was unveiled. Now, though, a Chevrolet dealer has given us our first indication as to the price point of the ZZ632.

Gandrud Chevrolet in Wisconsin is asking $29,499 to pre-order the engine, as first noticed by Muscle Cars & Trucks. However, the dealer suggests that the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is actually $37,758.72, which Chevrolet then confirmed to The Drive.

Apart from costing just a little less than a 2022 Camaro 1SS, that’s also considerably more than Dodge charged for its own 1,000 hp crate engine, the Hellaphant, which was priced from $29,995. That said, the 7.0-liter Dodge engine was only able to get there with a massive supercharger, whereas the ZZ632 is naturally aspirated.

Based on an expanded version of the ZZ572 block that was introduced with the COPO Camaro, the cast-iron block gets a forged steel crankshaft, forged steel con-rods, forged aluminum pistons, aluminum heads, port fuel injection, and a CNC-machined intake manifold.

Capable of revving up to 7,000 rpm, along with the ungodly power, the engine also makes a healthy amount of torque at 876 lb-ft (1,188 Nm) of torque while running on 93-octane gas.

The engine will be available through Chevrolet dealerships in early 2022.
