The Maserati Grecale Trofeo Is Shaping Up To Be A Very Exciting SUV

The flagship Maserati Grecale Trofeo has been spied testing up close during cold-weather testing in Europe. If rumored specifications prove to be accurate, the SUV market is about to get an exciting new entrant.

This prototype immediately stands out from most others spied in recent months as it is clad in a festive red camouflage. Despite the complex design of the wrap, we can still get a pretty good idea of what the SUV will look like when it’s unveiled early next year.

Found at the front of the Grecale is a recognizable Maserati grille with vertical slats and a prominent Trident badge. The SUV also sports square air intakes, although we suspect the camouflage is party disguising the design. A set of headlights similar in shape to those of the MC20 supercar are also featured and come complete with LED daytime running lights.

Elsewhere, this Grecale Trofeo prototype has a sportier set of wheels than most other prototypes which have been adorned with a matching red wrap as the rest of the bodywork. Hiding behind these wheels are large, cross-drilled discs and red brake calipers. Other key design elements of this prototype include an aggressive rear diffuser and quad tailpipes.

Maserati has not yet said what will power the range-topping Grecale but there are two candidates for the engine. One possibility is that Maserati will use the same twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 as found in the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio models, complete with 505 hp. The second, and more exciting possibility, is that the Trofeo will feature a detuned version of the all-new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 from the MC20.

Lesser variants of the Grecale will also be offered to customers. This will include one version with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology and reportedly delivering 296 hp and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque.
