Suzuki has yet to unveil the long-rumored five-door variant of the Jimny, but the students of Japan’s Nihon Automotive College (NATS) took notice and created their own bespoke conversion for this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon. The NATS Jimny “Kimun Kamui,” which translates to “Mountain God,” received a number of off-road-focused modifications making it virtually unstoppable while offering the roomiest cabin ever found in a Jimny.

NATS’ students are known for their interesting conversions so we were excited to hear about their latest project. They used a 2019 Suzuki Jimny Sierra as a base, transforming it to the pictured off-road animal.

In order to fit an extra pair of doors, the ladder frame chassis of the Jimny was extended by 15.7 inches (400 mm), the body was cut in half and custom panels were added to fill in the gaps, alongside a tiny quarter window. Since the front doors were left stock, the rear doors look rather small but they still significantly improve access to the rear seats. Thanks to the extended wheelbase, the rear passengers benefit from a healthy amount of legroom that is comparable to a large sedan. However, since the rear seat mounts were kept in their original position, the boot is still the same as in the stock three-door Jimny.

Besides the five-door conversion which was the main focus of the project, the Jimny got several new components in order to become a “Mountain God”. These include a new suspension with a 6-inch (152 mm) body lift and a new set of Black Rhino Riot 17-inch beadlock wheels shod in chunky Toyo Open Country A/T tires. Exterior features include an off-road bumper with an integrated winch, bolt-on wider fenders, a tubular protective frame all around the bodywork, a roof-mounted IPF light bar, plus a Feldon Shelter rooftop tent for camping trips.

Unfortunately, we don’t have high-quality pictures of the interior but a few videos from the show give us a hint of the roomy cabin. Interior modifications include the addition of an Alpine X9NXL multimedia unit replacing the stock infotainment, a Diecock audio system, GReddy Sirius vision gauges, leather upholstery for the seats, and a black headliner.

Under the bonnet, the 1.5-liter engine received a GReddy turbo kit, a new ECU tune, and an FV2 Blow Off Valve. As a result, the NATS Jimny produces 122 hp (92 kW / 124 PS) and 132 lb-ft (179 Nm) of torque, compared to the stock model’s 101 hp (75 kW / 102 PS) and 96 lb-ft (130 Nm).

Sadly, the NATS Suzuki Jimny “Kimun Kamui” is a one-off creation and is not offered for sale. It shows however the tuning potential of a potential future five-door Jimny, which would add practicality to the hugely popular off-roader.
