We’ve been hearing plenty about BMW’s 50th anniversary in 2022, but its arch rival AMG wants us to know it’s turning 55, and it’s come up with the Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Edition 55” to get the party started.

Available in Europe only for now and technically, a €17,850 ($19,719) option package available on the musclebound G 63 SUV, (which costs $156,450 in the U.S.), the Edition 55 is available in obsidian black metallic or G manufaktur opaline white bright paint and comes with a stack of visual goodies, including 22-inch forged cross-spoke wheels with a matt tantalum gray paint finish and a high-sheen rim.

AMG Night Packages I and II, which includes high-gloss black trim on parts like the radiator grille, turn signals and head- and tail lamps, and a silver chrome fuel filler cap bearing the AMG name are also part of the exterior package.

Tug the G’s military vehicle-like door open and you’re met with a stainless steel door trim featuring red illuminated AMG lettering, black AMG floor mats with red stitching and “Edition 55” lettering, and a microfiber-wrapped steering wheel with “AMG” and “55” badges. Carbon trim details and two-tone red and black nappa leather seats complete the look.

And that’s as far as the changes go. Under the hood it’s stock G 63, which means a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine that develops 577 hp (585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, all of which gets dished out to both axles via a nine-speed automatic transmission. Three differential locks are standing by in the unlikely event that you want to take your $177,000 SUV into the wilderness, while double-wishbone suspension and adaptive dampers should prevent that happening unless you really do want it to.

Mercedes-AMG hints that the G 63’s Edition 55 package is just the first of several anniversary specials we will see over coming months as the company celebrates the 1967 founding of the independent tuning and racing outfit it took complete control of in 2005, much like BMW has recently done with Alpina.
