Since its inception, the Mazda Miata’s core philosophy has always been one that prioritizes handling and driving dynamics over outright speed, yet with every successive generation there are still people who feel as though it could do with a little extra power bump. To answer those people, BBR has released a new supercharger kit that significantly increases the fourth-generation (ND) Miata’s power figures.

There are two versions of the kit: Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 1 is priced at £3,895 ($4,387) for just the hardware and £4,795 ($5,400) fully installed, while Stage 2 starts at £5,395 ($6,076) for the hardware and £6,495 ($7,313) fully installed. Both kits are available with options and can be fitted to all 2.0-liter Miatas from 2015 to 2019 (we assume that includes the hardtop RF as well).

In stock form, the ND Miata‘s 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-four produces 181 hp (184 PS / 135 kW) and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque in its most powerful guise. Equip the car with the Stage 1 version of BBR’s supercharger kit, and that rises to 225 hp (228 PS / 168 kW) and 200 lb-ft (271 Nm) of torque. Make the jump up to the Stage 2 kit, and those figures become as much as 250 hp (253 PS / 186 kW) and 220 lb-ft (298 Nm) of torque.

Regardless of which kit you pick, what you end up with is a car with a better power-to-weight ratio than something like a Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ, and it also has the added bonus of being a convertible. To give you a better sense of that power-to-weight ratio in action, BBR claims the Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits allow the Miata to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in 5.3 and 5.1 seconds respectively compared to the stock 7.3 seconds.

While Stage 1 is all about increasing boost pressure, Stage 2 focuses on increasing flow to add its extra power so as not to over-stress the engine. This is done primarily through the use of an in-house stainless steel exhaust system, though an optional Forge Motorsport intercooler upgrade can also be added to keep inlet charge temperatures in check.
