Peugeot announced new additions to its electrified model range for 2023, including self-charging hybrid versions of the 3008 and 5008 SUVs while confirming there is a fully electric e-408 coming soon. Starting next year, the entire Peugeot range – including passenger and commercial vehicles – will be available with at least one hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric powertrain option.

New Hybrid Engine

Peugeot introduced a new hybrid powertrain that will initially be available on the 3008 and 5008 before finding its way into a wider spectrum of models. It comprises a new PureTech petrol engine (likely an evolved derivative of the turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder unit) that produces 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS), a new “electrified dual-clutch gearbox” and a 48V battery. According to Peugeot, this self-charging setup brings a 15 percent reduction in fuel consumption compared to the ICE-only equivalent while allowing zero-emission driving for up to 1 km (0.6 miles) at low speeds in the urban environment.

Peugeot didn’t go into much detail but the hybrid option is expected to be a more affordable alternative to the already available plug-in hybrid models, and could potentially replace the petrol-powered PureTech variants in the future alongside the upcoming demise of the BlueHdi diesel, as stricter emission regulations are applied in Europe. Setting aside the Peugeot model range, the hybrid engine will most likely be used in an array of cars and SUVs from other Stellantis brands.

Fully Electric Peugeot E-408 Coming Soon

Peugeot confirmed that the 408 will soon gain a fully electric version next to the plug-in hybrid variants announced at launch. The electric fastback crossover will join the recently revealed E-308 and E-308 SW, the e-Rifter MPV, and the updated E-208 supermini in Peugeot’s EV range of passenger vehicles.

The French company didn’t go into specifics, but we expect the EMP2-based E-408 to share its electric powertrain with the related E-308. The latter is fitted with a single electric motor producing 154 hp (115 kW / 156 PS), while the 54 kWh battery is good for a range of around 400 km (249 miles).

Fuel-Cell Van And Fully Electric Scooter

Just like other Stellantis vans, the Peugeot e-Expert Hydrogen van is now available with fuel-cell technology as announced first back in December 2021. The hydrogen tanks can refuel in only 3 minutes, offering a driving range of 400 km (249 miles). The van is fitted with the familiar front-mounted electric motor producing 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 260 Nm (191.8 lb-ft) of torque. The payload is 1,000 kg (2,204 pounds) and the cargo volume is 6.1 cubic meters (215.4 cubic feet).

Finally, the French car maker announced the new Peugeot e-Streetzone, an electric two-wheeler set to debut at the Paris Motor Show, with up to 112 km (70 miles) of range. Peugeot wants 100 percent of its sales in Europe to be electric by 2030, including all vehicle types (e-bikes, e-scooters, vans, passenger cars, SUVs).
