You may or may not be aware of it, but Robert Downey Jr. is a bit of a car collector. However, as the founder of the planet-saving Footprint Coalition in 2019, his collection made him feel like a bit of a hypocrite. So now he is modifying classic vehicles in a new MAX original called “Downey’s Dream Cars” to make them greener.

“We are what we drive, and having amassed a formidable collection of classic cars over the years, I was a petrol spewing mess,” the actor said. “The last three years have been an experiment in hope, as I engaged the best and brightest minds to evaluate, educate, elevate, and decarbonize these vehicles in a way that demonstrates the limitless potential of creative problem solving.”

According to the studio behind the show, Downey is “bringing his old cars into the future,” and will be making them “faster, more powerful, and more efficient while keeping their soul intact.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s New Dream Cars Show Will Mod Classics Into EVs And Hybrids

While electromodding has become quite popular of late, the comment about keeping their souls intact suggests that it won’t be the only method employed here. Based on the first trailer for Downey’s Dream Cars, the cars featured in the program may not be going fully electric.

“Imagine someone pulling up next to me and saying, ‘Hey, bro. Does your [Buick Riviera] still have the original Nailhead in it?’ Sorry, dude, it’s a hybrid,” he says in the trailer.

In another scene, he can be seen suggesting that a vehicle will be converted to run on biodiesel. Although it won’t all be electric, Downey is no stranger to the technology, having been the spokesperson for Audi when it launched the e-tron GT.

We will find out exactly what the actor is up to when Downey’s Dream Cars premieres on June 22. On that date, MAX, which is the new blended streaming service of HBO Max and Discovery+, is releasing the first two episodes, with more debuting each Thursday until July 6.
